Burglary & Fire Certifications
A good quality safe should have passed burglary and fire tests and have certifications as proof. UL (Underwriters Laboratories) does much of the testings for burglary and fire. The industry standard for gun safes is the UL- RSC burglary certificate; the fire ratings widely vary by manufacturer.
American Quality & Company History
In consideration of the dozens of choices for safes, American made safes are hard to beat especially comparing to the low-cost Asian imports. We recommend gun safes made in the USA by reputable companies with proven track records. You can expect far better quality, less problems, and more satisfaction.
Points To Consider
The safe's body will be made from various gauges of steel and the smaller the gauge#, the thicker the steel (10 gauge is thicker than 12 gauge.) Most safes are made with a 12 or 10 gauge body, sometimes even heavier. The safe door will usually be a solid plate of steel to start and should be no less than 1/4" thick and 3/8" to 1/2" is preferable. Obviously the thickest, heaviest metal is superior. Locking Bolts may be on the sides only or on all four sides & the thickness ranges from 1" to 1-1/2". The Lock should be UL Listed- Group 2 lock or even better Group 1 lock. There are hundreds of choices & brands to upgrade to.
Some higher quality safes have a second steel body inside (steel liner) for double protection like is standard on American Security BF safes and optional on Ft Knox safes. Amsec also uses a type of concrete insulation between the two steel bodies (2" wall thickness) for maximum fire/burglary protection where most safes have 1/2" gypsum board. See examples of the BF safes at our home page link below.
Of course there are many other important points like the weight, relockers, door/jamb construction, on & on. Before you make your safe purchase, make sure you are buying American quality with certifications to back it up. Finding the least expensive safe usually means you found less burglary/fire protection if any at all.
